ABOUT ISABELLA VELLA

Isabella Vella is an emerging artist born in Toronto, Canada. She studied at McGill University in the Geography and Environmental Science faculties to build upon the socio-environmental themes in her paintings. She has shown work in both public and commercial galleries in her native Toronto surroundings, as well as galleries and exhibitions in New York City and the Albright Knox Museum in Buffalo.

Vella's practice combines painting and drawing, utilizing various media including ink, foraged pigment, acrylic, and gesso. Her materials' textures and opacities produce a flat-plain image where narratives can emerge simultaneously. Vella’s distinct visual language draws upon lived experience, ancestral folklore, and medieval artworks to illustrate narratives of intimacy between her female protagonists and their surroundings. Her heroines are depicted amidst a wealth of props, patterns, and scenery to create highly detailed dreamscapes rich with sexuality and mysticism. She is represented by Dianna Witte Gallery and is based in London, UK.
